Are the US/Canadian Governments allowed to stop protestors?

Now, I don't mean are they allowed to arrest/make people stop just when they protest something. I mean, when a protest group misleads people with false information are the Governments allowed to step in? I mean, I don't think they can but it would be interesting to hear other's information on this.
