Skunk Invasion!?

Somehow, likely because one night I closed the door to the basement too late, a skunk snuck into our basement. It refuses to come out during the day, of course, when we keep the doors open. I hesitate to open the doors at night as raccoons are numerous and much dirtier, and also because we live in an iffy city. The situation is worse still, because the basement has many crevices and rafters, and while it is not aggressive and shies away from people, I worry for my cats and for their food. Is there any other way other than calling pest control to get it out?
